Unlucky Laptop

November 27, 2008 – 11:31 pm

After months of papers and deadlines, I decided that Thanksgiving week would be the practical time to surrender my beloved computer to our campus’s tech team. My “D” key has not worked since July, my battery only lasts through one-third of a lecture class (or one-half of an episode of Gossip Girl), and the internal fan is so loud it overpowers anything playing on iTunes… which means my hearing is probably shot from perpetually wearing headphones the past few months.

I was all set and had prepared myself for separation anxiety; a week without a laptop would be so worth a working computer when school resumes. Unfortunately, the tech guy rattled off problem after problem and quoted repairs around $600. Ouch.

Interestingly enough, I just wrote an article about computer upgrades (”Laptop Logic: To buy or not to buy“) and so I can take my own advice and say that, yes, I am indeed in need of a new machine. My Macbook Pro has served me well over the past three years, but the new smaller, shinier Macbooks are looking pretty fantastic at this point. Has anyone had experience with them? Do they move a little faster? Is the grass trackpad heavenly?
